Fundraising for Cancer Research UK

Many many thanks to all of you, who over the last month have donated to Cancer Research UK.

My Olympic Torch did a mini-tour around Warwickshire (there's some details of where it went on this blog), it visited nurseries, brownie groups, local fetes and sports clubs. You were all very generous and donated money to Cancer Research UK in return for a photo with the torch.

The good news is that you all raised
over £400 for Cancer Research UK!

The exact total was £405.28, this was from £268.28 in collection goblets, £117 (at the time of writing) online and another £20 in gift-aid. You can still donate here if you want to.

Many thanks to you all...

We're hosting a badminton tournament soon,
also raising funds for Cancer Research UK,

The Breadmaker: Charity Badminton Tournament

Hey All,

There's a badminton tournament coming up, raising money for charity. It's at St Nicholas Sports Centre in Warwick on Saturday 8th September 2012 starting at 10am to 4pm and all profit is going to Cancer Research UK. It's a doubles tournament with two divisions.

One division is for Social/Recreational players, this is an 'Open' Division (i.e. mens, womens and mixed pairs compete together).

The other division is for Club/League players, this is a 'Mixed' Division (all pairs must be mixed).

There should be some great prizes to be won, possibly a speed gun there too (tbc) to measure the speed of your smash and most importantly it'll be raising money for Cancer Research UK.

The cost of the tournament is only £10 per player. The format is not a straight knock-out, ensuring that all pairs have several games throughout the day.

Places are limited, so if you would like to enter, please email Naomi (naomibrook01@gmail.com) confirming your name, partners name and the division you would like to enter.

Date: Saturday 8th September 2012
Venue: St Nicholas Sports Centre, Warwick
Time: 10am to 4pm
Cost: £10 per player (all profit to Cancer Research UK)
To Enter: email naomibrook01@gmail.com

It's a great way to get ready for the start of the season!

Cheers, Lucas.

Olympics 2012: BREAKING NEWS - Badminton Disqualifications

It's offical, the four womens doubles pairings who appeared to attempt to lose their matches last night have all been disqualified.

What this means now is unclear, we may go straight to the semi-finals with the four remaining pairs, or the 3rd places in each pool-group may now replace the disqualified pairs in the quarter-finals.

UPDATE: Apparently the next best pairs have all been promoted, those are pairs from Russia, Australia, Canada and South Africa.

A reminder of those banned pairings...

China's Wang and Yu and Korea's Jung and Kim both appeared to be trying to lose their match!

Korea's other pairing Ha and Kim, plus Indonesia's Polii and Jauhari were also not at their best!

2012 Olympics: It's a fast sport...!

Which is quicker...?

(L-R) Eurostar, Shuttlecock and Leamington Spa's Naomi Folkard.

Yeps, you guessed it, a shuttlecock travels faster than the Eurostar* and an arrow.

China's Fu Haifeng has the fastest recorded smash during play, which is a whopping 206 mph! Quicker than the sluggish-by-comparison arrow, which flies around 188mph and the Eurostar which reaches speeds of 199mph.

Fu Haifeng Fu Haifeng (R) goes to play a smash with Cai Yun of China in their doubles match against Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov of Russia during day two of the BWF World Badminton Championships and LOCOG Test Event for London 2012 at Wembley Arena on August 9, 2011 in London, England.
Fu Haifeng, can smash a shuttle quicker than you can drive your car!

Even more impressive however is that Malaysia's Tan Boon Heong has topped that, in a practice he hit a smash at 262mph.

Tan Boon Heong, 262mph or 421km/h it's fairly pacey whichever way you look at it.

Oh, you think they serve it quicker in Tennis? Wrong. The fastest recorded serve is a modest 164mph by Australia's Samuel Groth.

Nice try Samuel, but it's not as quick as badminton.

* thanks to Dan McLaughlin for the train stat!

2012 Olympics: Badminton Positives!

Contrary to all of the bad news in the badminton at the moment. It should be noted that that China's mens doubles pair Fu and Cai could have thrown their last group match too, this would have ensured that they would have avoided their Chinese team-mates in the quarter-finals. They didn't however, and now Fu and Cai will match up against Chai and Guo.

I know that all the players should play to win every single match regardless, but its good to see that most players are still out there to win.

You can catch that match here, it starts on Tab 6.

...whilst you're at it, why not check out on Tab 2 the South Korean pair of Lee and Jung against Malaysian pair of Koo and Tan, they're pretty much super-human! (but no, they're just amazing, no need for doping!).

This is what the sport is all about, top players at the top of their game, playing to Win!
